The AI4GreenSME project aims to equip managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the green and digital skills needed to accelerate their transition to the circular economy. By combining artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and innovative training approaches, the project directly supports the EU’s priorities of environmental sustainability and digital transformation.
As part of the pilot phase (February–June 2025), SMEs participated in an online training programme complemented by international collaborative activities. These activities were designed to foster exchange, peer learning, and practical application of concepts related to circular economy and AI.
Key Findings from the Collaborative Activities
- Participation: 38 participants completed feedback surveys, with the Circular Economy Literacy session attracting the highest attendance (40%). This highlights the strong interest in fundamentals as a foundation for more advanced topics.
- Preparation: 87% of participants reviewed the general documentation in advance, and 76% consulted the activity sheets. This prior preparation clearly enhanced the learning experience.
- Organisation: Participants rated the organisational quality highly (4.18–4.76/5), with the facilitator’s preparation receiving the top score (4.76/5). Strong facilitation and smooth logistics were key success factors.
- Content Usefulness: With scores ranging from 4.32–4.58/5, participants confirmed that the activities significantly deepened their understanding of the intersection between circular economy and AI. Two-thirds reported a substantial increase in knowledge.
- Networking: The creation of a European peer network was rated “Excellent” by 55% of respondents. Participants expressed strong interest in more continuous exchange, including dedicated forums and regular meetings.
Overall Conclusions
The evaluation shows very high satisfaction with the collaborative activities, confirming their role as a valuable complement to the training platform. The positive metrics (mostly above 4/5) and consistent qualitative feedback demonstrate that the programme already generates tangible benefits for SMEs.
At the same time, participants identified opportunities for improvement, including:
- Enhancing navigation and branding of the platform,
- Adding more AI demonstrations and case studies,
- Formalising networking spaces and post-course support.
These insights will inform the next steps in refining and scaling up the AI4GreenSME programme, ensuring its continued relevance and impact in empowering SMEs on their green and digital transformation journey.
